Juvenile Rights Project (JRP)
JRP is entering its second year after an amazing kick-off and overwhelming positive feedback! Through JRP, law students receive training regarding civil rights. Once trained, students will visit local high schools and give presentations to the students on the subject of their rights during police encounters.
The focus of the presentation primarily involves what the police can and cannot do and how best to deal with the police in certain encounters. Volunteers also emphasize what the students’ rights are, including the rights they have to refuse searches of different kinds, how to assert their rights, and even how best to address the officers to defuse the situation in the first place. In order to keep the students engaged, the presentations incorporate various role-playing activities.
